How to get the 5-year Teaching License from the Krusappha?

A lot of you have been asking about the process of getting the permanent five-year teaching license from Krusappha. Here, I will detail the process that my wife and I have gone through to obtain the five-year teaching license. So basically, this article will be based on our experience, and maybe some teachers will have their own experience of how they got their teaching license.

For those who do not know yet, initially, you will be given a two-year temporary waiver to teach without a license by the Krusappha, which you can renew up to three times. That’s equivalent to six years of temporary waivers. This amount of time is enough for you to enroll in an education course in case you have none. Nonetheless, anytime after the first waiver, assuming that you have an education degree or have a teaching license in your home country, you can apply for the five-year teaching license already.

So, the following are the standard teaching license requirements for foreign teachers that you will need to obtain a five-year teaching license based on the website of the Teacher’s Council of Thailand:

1. Not younger than 20 years of age
2. Have academic qualifications in one of the following:
    (a) Have a degree in education or its equivalent
    (b) Have a degree in another field and a teaching license from another country
    (c) Have a degree in another field and a graduate diploma in the teaching profession with 1 year of course study
    (d) Have a degree in another field and have passed other professional certifications in accordance with the professional standards of the Teachers’ Council of Thailand
3. Have continuing experience in teaching of not less than 1 year
4. Have a Thai work permit
5. Have evidence showing that an applicant has been permitted to stay in Thailand
6. Not possess any of the prohibited characteristics pursuant to section 44 of the Teachers and  Educational Personnel Council Act B.E. 2003
    • Having improper behavior or immorality
    • Being an incompetent or quasi-incompetent person
    • Having been sentenced to imprisonment in any case, in the opinion of the Teachers Council of Thailand, which may bring dishonor upon the profession.

You can download these comprehensive Guidelines Related to Teaching License Application for Foreigners.

So, if you think you are qualified to get the five-year teaching license better get one to avoid the hassle of applying for a temporary waiver every time you will renew your Non-B visa.

You can read the step by step guide on how to apply including the forms that you will need to fill in in the guidelines related to teaching license application for Foreigners but I will still outline it here below to make it easier for you:

First, download and fill in the Application Form.

The following are the documentary requirements that you need to prepare:

  1. Copy of educational certificate along with official transcripts
  2. Copy of teaching license/ certificate from abroad (If any)
  3. Original official degree confirmation letter for graduates of institution or an original official Transcript or original of statement of professional standing (as the case may be)
  4. Copy of Translation of non-English or Thai documents
  5. Copy of documentary evidence related to your professional certification (if any)
  6. Original of Professional Experience Evaluation Form (this form must be completed and signed by all evaluators and enclosed with a copy of their current professional licenses)
  7. Copy of all the used pages of the teacher’s passport; preferably the photo page and present Non-B Visa page
  8. Copy of all the used pages of the teacher’s work permit
  9. Other relevant documents (if any)e.g. Certificate of Name/Surname Change, Certificate of Marriage/Divorce, or related document, in case of name, or surname discrepancy between that appears on the degree certificate and
    that appears on the passport
  10. Two 1 x 1.25 inch half-length, full face photograph; wearing formal clothing without hat and sunglasses; taken within 6 months before application submission (Do not wear a t-shirt or tank top, no smile; taken against plain, blue or white background)
  11. Payment receipt for registration fee: 500 Baht

Next, prepare all the applicable documents above and give them to your school’s liaison officer who is in-charged of foreign teachers.

Depending on your school, the officer may scan all the documents for you or he/she can ask you to scan all the documents by yourself. If they ask you this, don’t be angry, remember getting the license is for our own personal gain and we are just asking them the favor to apply for us.

For the application process, your school will do this through Krusappha KSP website. Your school will make an account for you on the website and upload all the scanned documents there. It’s in their discretion whether to give you access to the account or you will just wait for it. My wife has been given access by her school so she can see everything about the application process in real-time. For me, they didn’t give the access but they update me every time about my application process.

These are the stages of your application process. Your school can monitor this on the KSP website. Each stage turns green every time the Krusappha finishes each stage. When the last stage turns green it means that your school can now download the teaching license.

Your school can see here whether your documents passed the screening process or you need to submit more documents before it gets approved.

Some teachers I’ve talked to said it took them almost a month to get the license done. But as for me and my wife, it only took less than two weeks before we get our teaching license.

So, if you have a question feel free to comment down below and I’d be happy to answer again based on our experience. Thank you and I hope it helps you.

      1. Should be “not younger than 20 years old”. And it’s for foreign teacher applicants.

  2. This is very well-written and would make great advice if it were not for the changes instituted by the Ministry of Education in 2019. Most importantly, foreign degrees are no longer being accepted for teacher licensure and only 3 Thai universities have been approved. As absurd as it sounds, and while I suspect they may walk it back, this is currently the official policy. Foreign teachers with a teaching certificate in their home country are still being licensed, but those without must obtain a graduate degree or teaching program diploma from one of the three approved Thai Universities only. This means that even the Nottingham PGCE and Framingham M.Ed. Programs are no longer accepted (as with ANY foreign universities).

    1. What are the three approved Thai universities? I couldn’t find any information about that on the Krusapha website.

      1. Also, why wouldn’t a PGCEi qualify? Wouldn’t it satisfy letters “a” and “c”?

  3. I got my Bachelors degree in Education from India (B.ed 2019-2021). Is it valid to apply for 5 years teaching licence?

    1. I know someone like your case who got the five year license last February this year. However, it is best to contact Krusaapha directly as the rules constantly change. I heard they have new rules about that. I can only speak from my experience. Thanks.

  4. Anybody here experienced the same thing with me? Our school coordinator, applied my five year teaching license to Krusapha. I gave her all the proper documents. She scanned and sent every document. Then, after a month, she gives me a receipt from Krusapha, I was told to pay 500 Baht at 7/11. So I did. Will the payment is the final step, before I receive the license.

  5. Hello, thanks for the fantastic update. Can I ask, when did you receive your qualification? Does this apply for those who qualified post-2019? I qualified (iPGCE) in Jan 2020 and have yet been unable to obtain my 5 year permit as I was informed that I need to sit an examination, however I was wondering whether this evaluation form replaces that examination or is for those who completed their qualifications pre-2019. Many thanks

    1. I am pre-2019 qualified. Have you tried to personally inquire at Krusappha? I go there every time I have questions about obtaining the license and they are very helpful. I also heard about teachers who have the same situation as you. I would suggest to personally go to Krusappha. There’s nothing more accurate than first hand information. I hope for the best.

      1. Thanks for these helpful updates. Does this mean that the entire process is online? How about the sealed documents in an envelope from my institution where I got my degree? It says in the guidelines that only Krusappha can open that one.

        Like

      2. Yes, its online. The sealed envelop from the institution where you graduated from should be given to your current school. They will be the one to open it. They will write a note on the envelop as to when they opened it( the date and the exact time). They will scan the letter including the envelope and upload to the account they created in the krusapha website.

  6. Thank you very much for these informations. In fact for those that have a teachers license from they countries before 2019 they can apply for the 5 years license, after 2019 included, everyone has to take the kurusapa test, if they have any teacher license (pos 2019) or bachelor in education, to be allowed to take the test. Who doesn’t have (teachers license or degree in education) must graduate (at least one year course) in education (Diploma in Education) in one of the few universities approved by OHEC (in Thailand). One of them is Sta Theresa in Nakon Nayok province.

So, I am working on getting my licensure from the US. I currently am working in Thailand right now, but have my bachelor’s degree is an English major, not an education major. I am needing to study and pass the US test and then I will try to bring this license to get my Thai license. However, I have been hearing reports that the Kurusapha is making even licensed teachers (from another country) take the test. Do you know if this is true?

    1. That’s not true. Getting a teaching license from your home country is the best option. (Krusappha Elligibility no. 2B. A noneducation degree plus teaching license from home country.)

  8. On the 24th February I applied for my 5 years teaching license. Today, 27th of February I was asked to download and pay 500 Baht for my teaching license application . Afterwards the invoice icon disappeared and an icon appeared asking for more information after that icon disappeared and I received another icon with a receipt for my payment. I have a BA in Hospitality from Derby university in the UK and a 120 hrs TEFL certificate In January 2023, I received an award for an iPGCE through Derby University in the UK. So this online process is not easy. I also had to contact tecttest or something like that by email to confirm if my iPGCE is an acceptable qualification. I will now have to wait I suppose one or two days to find out. If it is not then I have basically lost 120,000 Baht for studying something that’s no longer accepted in Thailand. What makes me really angry is the fact that when I requested an additional 2 years license and told them what I was going to study, no one said that it would not be accepted.

  9. I have a degree in history, not education. I do not have a teaching cert from the usa, nor a graduate degree. Just the history ba and tefl. What would most likely be the simplest route? 1 year grad course for route (c)? Or, assuming I ace them, and stay out of prison, just test through (d)?

    1. Guys that now have a place you can sign up for 7 modules instead of getting you post graduate certificate. Once you complete the year long process of the modules, you are allowed to sit for your licensure test. That is as long as you have been working at your same school for at least a year. Once I get the website link I will post it

  14. What is the screening process? How do they check authenticity? Do they call or message your institute? Or require documents from them? I studied at an institute that has recently closed down so not sure how they would contact them? – but all my documents are legalized by a notary from the high court as well as legalized.
